Elizabeth Hanover (1820-1821) - Find a Grave Memorial

British Royalty. Born Elizabeth Georgina Adelaide of Clarence, the only surviving child of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen and William, Duke of Clarence, the third eldest son of King George III. Born six week prematurely at St. James' palace, London, she was christened immediately in the expectation that she would not survive. At the time of her birth, she was third in the line of succession to the British throne. As a granddaughter of the king, she was styled Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of Clarence. Her father was the second in line to the throne after the death of his niece, Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817, and of George III in 1820. Neither King George IV nor his next eldest brother, Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, had any legitimate children, so it seemed likely that Princess Elizabeth would succeed as Queen. At the age of twelve weeks, however, she suddenly succumbed to convulsions, reported to be a result of an ‘intro-susception of the bowels.' The death was announced in the London Gazette. The body of the Princess was taken from St. James' Palace, accompanied by two of the King's Gentleman Ushers and a cavalry escort. The procession was followed by a mourning coach and the Grooms of the Bedchamber to the Duke of Clarence. The Princess was interred in the Royal Vault at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. The Clarences commissioned a sculpture of their daughter in repose from artist William Scoular, which remained in their apartments for the rest of their lives. It was bequeathed by Queen Adelaide to Queen Victoria, who had followed Elizabeth in the line of succession. Victoria kept the sculpture in her apartments for many years. The work is now on display at the private royal residence of Frogmore House in Windsor Great Park.
