Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company B, 111th Illinois Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 14, 1864 at Resaca, Georgia. His citation reads "Voluntarily returned, in the face of a severe fire from the enemy, and rescued a wounded comrade who had been left behind as the regiment fell back."
