North Carolina Governor. He served in the Confederate Army, until he was captured in 1862 at Roanoke Island. He was a member of the state legislature and was the major general in the adjutant general's department. He served as a superior court judge. He resigned his judicial position in 1867, to avoid following orders of the state's military governor. In 1889, he was elected as the Governor of North Carolina. He was the first state's governor to live in the present day Governor's Mansion. He decorated the house with his own furniture. He died three months after moving in. North Carolina legend states that his ghost first began haunting the mansion when some of his furniture was replaced in the 1960s.
