Civil War Officer. During the Civil War, he became the commander of Gist's Brigade. On September 20, 1863, during the Battle of Chickmauga, he was mortally wounded. He died two days later. He was one of four Confederate Army commanders killed at Chickamauga. A large monument now marks the place where he fell. He was the son of United States Representative Walter T. Colquitt, and the brother of Brigadier General Alfred Holt Colquitt, who was a United States Senator and Georgia governor. In his book "Reminiscences Of The Civil War," Major General John B. Gordon referred to Colquitt as a "brilliant leader."
