Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Orderly Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps on board the Union warship "USS Ticonderoga". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in the assault on Fort Fisher, North Carolina, from January 13 to 15, 1865, His citiation reads in part "he performed his duties with skill as a Marine Guard, and ship gun captain. He maintained well placed fire upon the batteries to the left of the palisades during the initial phases of the 3-day battle. Due to his actions the firing power of guns on the mount which had been turned upon Federal assaulting columns was considerably lessened. During this action the Union flag was planted on one of the strongest fortifications possessed by Confederate rebels". His Medal was awarded to him on June 22, 1865.
