U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After graduating from Iowa State University, in 1916, he was a sales analyst and accountant for a rubber company in Akron, Ohio. During World War I, he served as a Captain in the 35th Infantry, U.S. Army (1917 to 1919). After the war, he continued to work in the rubber industry and was an assistant professor of military science and tactics at the University of Iowa (1921 to 1923). He graduated with a law degree from Columbia University in 1928, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practicing law in Iowa City, Iowa. Entering politics, he was solicitor for Iowa City (1933 to 1935) and Mayor of Iowa City (1935 to 1937). In 1939, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1955. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving (1955 to 1961). After leaving the Senate, he moved to Seattle, Washington, and lived in retirement until his death.
