It's hard to believe you've already been gone one thousand nine hundred fifty seven years. Where does the time go?

People forget that you learned to be cruel and severely hedonistic from your uncle, Tiberius, whom you lived with for six years and then killed. You knew what you were doing.

An interesting parallel can be made between Caligula and a modern dictator: "Papa Doc" Duvalier of Haiti. He started out, although very well on the road to life-time rule, began as a benevolent despot. However at one point he went into a deep diabetic coma that almost killed him. When he recovered he was different. He was implying he was a voodoo god-made mortal, his cruelty went to unbelievable and he killed thousands of Haitians with his secret police, who also had a name linked to Voodoo, Tom-Tom Macouta. Like Caligula a serious health crisis, survived, turned into someone else. In the 20th Century historians can speculate with some medical backing the diabetic coma and his post-coma rule were linked to brain damage. Caligula's "illness" we will never know because medical science was non-existent! Had it not been for the "fever" who can say what kind of ruler Caligula MIGHT have become.

The "fever" you had was the clue to what happened to your reign. Meningitis? Some severe neurological damage the fever aggravated somehow? Schizophrenia that surfaced? An insect-born disease that caused brain inflamation? Syphilis? The Ancient World knew nothing of these things. Perhaps had you been living today, a simple psychiatric medication would have arrested the disorder or a antibiotic eradicate the infection..(?) We will never know for sure.

Caligula, you could not help your family's tragedies because they happened when you were very young. You also could not help the fact that you became very sick as a young man.
