11th Premier of Quebec. A member of the Liberal Party, he served in this position from May 1897 until his death. Born in Dorchester (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu), Lower Canada (now part of the Quebec Province), his father was a lumber merchant. Following his education, he became a journalist and writer as well as a notary. In 1867 he entered politics and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the district of Saint-Jean and retained his seat until his death. From 1892 until 1897 he became Leader of the Opposition and replaced Edmund James Flynn as Quebec's Premier when the Conservative Party lost the May 1897 election. During his tenure, he tried to establish a Ministry of Education post in his government but the proposal was defeated in the Quebec Legislative Council. He died in office at Quebec City, Quebec, Canada at the age of 68 and was succeeded by Simon-Napoleon Parent.
