Mozambique President. Machel served as the President of Mozambique from June 25, 1975, until his death on October 19, 1986. Machel was killed on October 19, 1986, along with 33 other people when there plane crashed into the Lebombo Mountains. The crash was thought to be an accident at first, but later proven to be deliberate. He was succeeded as President by Joaquin Chissano. He was Featured on all the Mozambique Metical banknotes.
