Royalty of the Netherlands. Born Juliana Emma Louise Wilhelmina of the Orange-Nassau dynasty and Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld, she was the only daughter of Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Prince Consort of Holland, and Queen Wilhelmina. In 1948 she became sovereign of the Netherlands and the East Indies following her mother's abdication to the throne and remained so until 1980 assuming the role of Queen Mother and Princess of the Netherlands after this date. She was considered a ruler of considerable cultural stature thanks to her university studies in economics, jurisprudence, sociology, European and international law both at home and in exile in Canada in the pre-war period. Giuliana, already as hereditary Princess, was highly appreciated by the people for the humanitarian aid carried out immediately after the end of the Second World War and for her constant interest in the populations of the third world. She died of complications from pneumonia after suffering from Alzheimer's Disease in the last years of her life.
