In the summer of 2006 I took some stuff to the local recycle center here in town.

While I was sorting the different things into the bins I noticed a small, skinny black and white kitten over by a small trash can.

It would jump into the trash can and was scratching at something in the can. I went over to see what it was digging at and the kitten ran off a few yards and just sat there and warily watched me.

The kitten had been trying to get an empty roasted chicken packet open. There was nothing visible in the container but I guess the kitty could smell the chicken that had been in there.

I tried calling the kitten to me but it wouldn't come and would move away if I tried to get close to it.

All the while I sorted I watched the kitten and it kept going back to the chicken container in the trash. It still kept an eye on me.

The kitten had huge gorgeous topaz colored eyes.

When I was finished sorting I tried one more time to call the kitty to me but it would have nothing to do with me.

Then I had one of my 'brighter' ideas... I thought if I can just put the chicken container in my car and shut the door of the car really quickly then I'll have her. So I got the container and put it on the passenger seat of my car. I left the door nearest the can open and went to the front of the car a few feet away and waited. The thought of shutting the door on the cat gave me pause but I asked God to just please either let me catch the kitten or let it get out of the car without getting hurt.

The first attempt was just that, an attempt. She saw me starting to ease up to the car and ran. Sooooo I put the container in the driver's seat and decided when I saw her go over the console I'd hurry and shut the door.

It worked! And there she sat on the driver's seat looking at me like she could rip my head off blinkin those huge eyes. When I walked around to the driver's door reality hit. Here I stood OUTSIDE my car with a PO'ed kitty trapped IN my car. Not a plan that I'd totally thought through. Well one thing was for sure it was too hot for me to stand here very long and the car would be heating up setting there in the sun so I was gonna have to get it in gear and do something. I decided to E A S E the driver's door open and get in really quickly. I walked up closer to the door and she left the seat and flew over behind the passenger seat onto the floorboard. I opened the door and got into the car as quickly as I could.

Next part of the plan that I hadn't thought through very well. I have an older Camaro and the air conditioning doesn't work and I knew I couldn't roll the windows down for the drive home or the kitten would go out the window.

So I opened the windows about 2 inches and started the car for the mile drive home.

That kitten went ballistic. She was making the rounds from dash to windows to backseat and round and round like a motorcycle rider in the globe at the circus. She was making perfect banks off the few surfaces of the car that she actually touched. And the cat hair was FLYING!! I knew I couldn't drive all the way home with her doing this so I closed my eyes and stuck my hand in front of her on the dash... she skidded to a stop, gave me another, 'go to you know where' look and back behind the passenger seat into the floorboard she went.

The air was filled with cat hair and I was starting to heat up and sweat so away I went. I just rolled my lips in so none of the hair would get on'em, breathed through my nose and away we went. She never left her hide-e-hole the whole ride but she did watch me with those golden eyes, never took'em off me, I don't think.

We got home without incident. I pulled into the drive and shut the car off. Another change and she didn't like it, she'd just gotten used to the riding in the car thing. I wanted to catch her and get food and water out for her before I let her go that way maybe she wouldn't run off.

I slowly reached toward her behind the seat and she watched my hand as it came closer and closer to her. When my hand was just a few inches from her she just put her little head down like she thought this was her final moment on this earth, she was DONE fighting this crazy person.

I got her by the scruff of the neck and out of that hot car we came. Me and my new rescued baby. I got food and water set up on my patio, went into the house, opened the patio door, reached out and eased her down by the food. Luckily I'd just put a small amount of food out because she ate all of it and drank some water. Then she just lay down by the food bowl in the sunshine and went sound asleep.

Later I took out a bit more and she was still there and ate more.

I've never seen a cat that was that skinny. You could actually see her little ribs through the skin. That made those golden eyes seem even larger and she was still keeping an eye on that crazy human that was still hanging around.

I started calling her Recycle because of where we met and it just stuck. My Recycle... a recycled kitty.

She may've been a 'recycled' pet, one someone threw away and another put to great use, but for me, she was such a precious, loving baby.

In the years since that day I found her a home, but it wasn't meant to be, the lady decided she couldn't handle a cat that was on the wild side. Before I'd given her away she'd just started letting me touch her and pet her just a bit but still wouldn't let me pick her up. I had to buy a live trap to catch her to take her to the vet and this was after she became an inside kitty.

In the evenings when I'd be watching TV she'd climb into my lap and nap or just set and look at me with those big beautiful eyes.

Recycle would always sit like she is in the pic of her on this page, with her little tail neatly wrapped around her feet. She was so dainty.

I've read that when a cat 'marks' you with their mouth that it's a compliment. She would just touch me with her mouth and slobber all over me. She was a juicy little sugar giver. I'm gonna miss my snuggle buddy so much.

Recycle loved to chase a laser light. She would play 'til she dropped unless I stopped and put it away. All I had to say was, "Wanna play?" and she'd start looking at the floor for the light. While she was still an outside kitty she would chase the light up into the redbud tree in the backyard. (She's buried beneath the branches of that tree now)

After she came home for the second time I told her that she wouldn't ever leave me again. And she didn't until today... I had to have her put to sleep. Her quality of life wasn't going to be good and though it was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make, I knew it was the best one for her.

Her brother, CoCo and sisters, Alpha and Peeka know that something's up, they're really subdued tonight. I know they miss her. She was the youngest of the lot but she 'mothered' all of them and if she wasn't on my lap in the evenings then she was snuggled up with one of them.

I was definitely HER human, guess she'd decided that I wasn't so bad after all....

I miss my Recycle, I love you baby girl. xOx

Today when I called and told my sister, Recycle's auntie, about having her put to sleep she later sent me these two texts...

"your love brought her to you and now your love will make sure she suffers no more."

"Bet you told her you loved her this morning didn't you, she knew, sister, just how much mom loved her. Look at what you two have already been through."

Her auntie called Recycle her little 'pencil' tail because her tail tapered to such a small little thing. I know her auntie loves her and will miss her also....

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, sunshine and toys, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. Those who were abused or mal-treated have had their tears wiped away, and sit for as long as they want on the Golden Flowing Robes of God's Lap. They feel the touch of Pure Love on their heads and finally know happiness. All the animals are happy and content, except for one small thing -they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent and her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

TREASURED SEASONS

For everything there is an appointed season.
And a time for everything under heaven.
A time for sharing.
A time for caring.
A time for loving.
A time for giving.
A time for remembering.
A time for parting.
You have made everything beautiful in its time
For everything you do remains forever.
