U.S. Senator. He graduated from Hobart College, in 1834, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1837 and commenced to practice law in Rochester, New York. He was District Attorney of Wyoming County, (1847-50), moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1851 and was judge of the first judicial circuit of Wisconsin, (1853-56). In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1869 and was a strong supporter of President Abraham Lincoln's administration during the Civil War. After his term, resumed the practice of law in Chicago and was president of the University of Chicago and was a professor in its law school.
