Hockey Innovator, Businessman. A native of Bristol, England, Calder excelled at sports including, soccer, golf, rugby, and cricket, all as a young man. He later became a journalist with the Montreal Witness. A true Hockey visionary he later helped shape the game. Calder also became involved in several teams including the Toronto Arenas, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, helping to plan there clubs and what have you. Calder also became the first President of the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise from 1917 until his death in 1943. He also presented a trophy to the hockey Rookie of the Year from 1936 to 1943. The NHL later named the Calder Memorial Trophy in his memory. Calder died in February 1943 at the age of 66. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1948.
