6th Triple Crown Winner. The 1943 Triple Crown winner was ridden by Johnny Longden. Because of World War II, there were restrictions on travel and rationing of gasoline, causing speculation the Kentucky Derby would be scratched. Only 65,000 patrons showed up and no out-of-town tickets were sold. He won the Derby by three lengths and the route was on, winning the Preakness by eight and the Belmont by twenty five. However, Count Fleet sustained a career ending injury to an ankle and was retired to stud never to race again. He became America's leading sire in 1951 and produced 38 stakes winners in his career. He lived to the age of thirty three.
