Composer. He studied composition at the National Conservatory of the University of Chile. He also was civil employee of the Institute of Musical Extension and for several years sound engineer of the Theater Antonio Varas. In the allendista period, he was Artistic Director of the television channel of the University of Chile. From the same day of the coup d'etat, Sergio obtains asylum in the Embassy of Panamá in Chile. Later, the same year, he left Chile for France where he lived until his death. He had a great number of musical comedies like "Asunto Sofisticado," "La dama del abanico" and many works with texts of the poet Pablo Neruda, like the cantata "Fulgor y muerte de Joaquin Murieta," the "Canto General" and many others. The songs that gave him more fame are: "Venceremos," with lyrics by Claudio Iturra, and "El Pueblo Unido jamás será vencido" with the collective collaboration of the famous group "Quilapayún." He composed more than 10 operas and several cantatas, songs and works of diverse nature like music for cinema, theater, of symphonic camera. At the time of his death, he was director of l'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Pantin, France. He was buried in a flank of the tomb of Victor Jara.
