World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hampshire, England, he served as a Captain in the 6th Squadron, Royal Air Corps and was the first British flying ace. Following an initial air victory in June, on July 25 1915, when on patrol Captain Hawkers brought down three German aircraft near Ypres, Belgium. He later went on to score a total of seven confirmed air combat victories. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Major and was the first pilot to receive the Victoria Cross. He was later killed in a dogfight with the legendary German ace the Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen over Bapaume, France. Regiment/Service: Royal Flying Corps, 24th Sqdn. Honors: V C, D S O, Mentioned in Despatches. Son of Mrs Julia Hawker, of 5, Victoria Terrace, Eastbourne and the late Lieut. Henry Colley Hawker, R.N.
