John Jay Calter, husband of Christine (Nowacki) for 32 years, passed away Aug. 14, at the age of 60, after a four-year battle with cancer. Jay was born in South Boston, son of the late Thomas and Kathryn (Moore) Calter, raised and educated in Avon. Jay was a graduate of Avon High School, class of 1970 and cherished the friendships he still had with many of his classmates. When Jay and Chris married, they made their home in South Boston for many years before moving to Brockton in 1983. Jay was employed by NSTAR, formerly Boston Edison, before retiring in 2007 after 37 years of service. Jay followed in the footsteps of his Dad and Uncle Bill and became a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Randolph. He progressed through the chairs of officers and was elected to Exalted Ruler of the Randolph Lodge in 1998-1999. He continued his loyalty to the BPOE at the Braintree Lodge; serving in many chairs and again became Exalted Ruler in 2003-2004. Having earned the respect of his peers, he received the honor of District Deputy Designate. Post resignation of that position, Jay was bestowed the honor of Esquire to the District Deputy; both of which he was extremely proud of. He lived the life of a man who truly appreciated his time on earth. Many people were touched by Jay who always brought them much love and laughter. Although gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts. Jay is survived by his wife Chris; his three amazing children, daughter Deidre McCarthy and her husband Jack of Randolph, son Shawn and his wife Meaghan and daughter Bridget of Brockton; four grandchildren, Declan, Shaelyn, Jackson and Laney; five siblings, Janet Bessette of Minnesota, State Representative Thomas Calter and his wife Patricia of Kingston, Joanne Mains, Nancy Foster and her husband Kevin, Julie Schales and her husband Ron of Avon; Godfather of Kerri Brennan, Cheryl Bessette, Declan James, Peyton Anastas; many aunts, uncles; nieces, nephews; and two great-nephews. Visiting hours Friday, 4-8 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home, 134 South Main St., Randolph. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Randolph, Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Michaels Cemetery, Avon.
