Composer. He studied under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who remained a strong influence on his conservative, folk-inflected style. The one Ippolitov-Ivanov work still heard today is his orchestral suite "Caucasian Sketches" (1894). He was director of the Moscow Conservatory from 1905 to 1924 and principal conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre from 1925 until his death.
