He was brevetted Major, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services during the campaign in East Tennessee and at the Siege of Knoxville, Tennessee" and Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services at Fort Steedman and in the assault before Fort Sedgwick, Virginia".
