Murder Victim. A beautiful young girl, ready for a night of fun and pranks on October 30, that ended in tragedy and heartache. This heartache would last for 27 years after the brutal murder. After all those years a suspect would finally be convicted in the case. That man was Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, whose family had been neighbors of the Moxleys in an upscale neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut. For years nothing was mentioned about the case publicly. Residents of Greenwich didn't speak of the terrible crime which had gone unsolved. Meanwhile, in 1983, the Greenwich Time/Stamford Advocate hired a freelance writer to write an article on the case. The article appeared to be "so controversial" at the time that the publishers shelved it until 1991 when a rumor started floating around Greenwich that William Kennedy Smith, then facing a rape charge on which he was acquitted in Palm Beach, Florida, but that he had been at the Skakel home the night Martha was murdered. This rumor proved to be untrue, but sparked curiosity into the unsolved murder. The article stirred new public interest. Regaining national attention when the first book about the murder was released "A Season in Purgatory" by Dominic Dunne, in 1993. Future books would fuel the unsolved murder further, "Murder in Greenwich" by Mark Fuhrman, released in 1998. Another book "Greentown: Murder and Mystery in Greenwich, America's Wealthiest Community" was published in 1998 and it was written by Greenwich native, Timothy Dumas, his findings also pointed to the possible involvement of one of the Skakel brothers in the crime. Timothy would publish another book in 1999 about Martha, the name of that book was "A wealth of evil" it was released in 1999. The brutal murder of Martha would finally be brought to justice, only it wasn't about to end there, Appeals would continue until 2013 when Judge Thomas Bishop wrote that defense in such a case requires attention to detail, an energetic investigation and a coherent plan of defense, stating "Trial counsel's failures in each of these areas of representation were significant and, ultimately, fatal to a constitutionally adequate defense...As a consequence of trial counsel's failures as stated, the state procured a judgment of conviction that lacks reliability." Michael Skakel would walk out of jail on a bond for $1.2 million along with other conditions. Other books have been written and released about the case. (bio by: Memorial Flower)
