Retired Navy Adm. Roger E. Nelson, 93, of 716 W. North St., a former dean of Dickinson College, died Friday in Carlisle Hospital.

Nelson developed a doctrine for the use of cruiser firepower before World War II and served in combat during the war.

He survived the sinking of the transport ship Edward Rutledge during the invasion of North Africa in 1942, commanded the first group of landing ship/tank vessels to cross the Atlantic Ocean and commanded an assault group during the invasion of Sicily in 1943. He also helped with the planning and execution of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944.

His military decorations included the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre medals.

After retiring from the Navy as a rear admiral, he joined the Dickinson College faculty and was the school's dean from 1960-63. He then resumed teaching at the college until his retirement in 1971.

He was a 1922 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, who later taught at the academy and at Dartmouth College, where he earned a master's degree.

He formerly served on the boards of the Bosler Free Library and of the former Community Chest.

He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute, the Dartmouth Scientific Association, the American Mathematical Association, the Carlisle Rotary Club, the Eclectic Club of Cumberland County, the Cumberland County Historical Society, the Retired Officers Association, and the Military Order of the World Wars.

He was the widower of Isabel Wilcox Nelson. Surviving are a son, Roger E. Jr. of Manchester, Md.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ray of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Esther Higgins of Albion, Mich.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Carlisle Barracks Chapel. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, North Middleton Twp.
