AGED CITIZEN DEAD.
_____

John Lane Breathes His Last Along the
Roadside.
_____

Tuesday evening between five and
six o'clock a gentleman named Cooper
passed Uncle John Lane of this city
driving eastward on the road two and
a half miles southeast of here. Mr.
Cooper noticing that the old gentle-
man was very weak and about to fall
out of his buggy, hurried to his as-
sistance. Mr. Lane requested Cooper
to lay him along the roadside stating
that he was very sick. Mr. Cooper
obeyed the old man's request, after
which he ran to the home of S. Bowers
for assistance. Several responded to
the call while others came to this city
after Dr. Sigler but before the latter
arrived Mr. Lane had breathed his
last.
A message was immediately sent to
Mrs. Lane announcing the startling
news of her husband's sudden death,
after which the remains were convay-
ed to the home of the deceased, the
last residence on the east side of
South Anderson street.
Mr. Lane was one of Madison
county's old settlers having spent the
greater part of his life in this city and
Frankton. For several months he has
been very feeble and he realized that
death wasn't far distant. Had he
lived until the 2nd of December, this
year, he would have reached the ad-
vanced age of seventy. The deceased
leaves a loving wife, who shares the
sympathy of hosts of friends and rela-
tives in her sad bereavement. He
was the father of seventeen children
most of whom are living.
For a number of years Mr. Lane has
been engaged in the real estate busi-
ness. While in health he proved him-
self to be a shrewd and successful busi-
ness man and was well known by his fair
dealings with all men.
The funeral was held at the house
this afternoon (Wednesday) at 4
o'clock followed by interment in the
Elwood city cemetery.
