World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kinghorn, Scotland, he served as Sergeant in Company C, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, British Army. On November 27, 1917, at Fontaine Notre Dame, France, Sergeant John McAulay's company was under a German counter attack when his commading officer was wounded. Sergeant John McAulay assumed command of the company and set up a defensive position. He rallied his men and was instrumental in killing more than fifty Germans, which resulted in repelling the attack. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross presented by King George V at Buckingham Palace in March 1918. After the war, he resumed his career as Glasgow Police Constable and was later a Senior Inspector. He died at age 67.
