World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in he served as a Private in the 17th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, British Army. At Lempire, France, August 6, 1917, while in the trenches which were being heavily shelled, Private Butler picked up a un-exploded shell and jumped to the entrance of the emplacement. At that moment a party of infantry were passing, he shouted to them to hurry past and turning round, placed himself between the party of men and the live shell till they were out of danger. He then threw the shell and took cover in the bottom of the trench, the shell exploded leaving his hand, greatly damaging the trench. For most prestigious bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on December 5, 1917.
