Nancy Ann Jenkins is the daughter of Thomas Jenkins and Nancy Ann (Stafford) Jenkins. She married James Murphy Feb. 3, 1848 in Brown Co., IN. James and Nancy had 6 children: George Washington Murphy, Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) Livezey, Nancy Ellen (Murphy) Nail, Elizabeth (Murphy) Campbell, Serrenia Caroline (Murphy) Bills, and an infant that died at 3 months of age.
Nancy and her family were Baptist in faith. Her husband served as a Deacon in the church and was a blacksmith & carpenter by trade.

Nancy had given birth to her last child (unk. name) shortly before she died. The baby died around the age of 3 months, shortly after the death of Nancy. Mary Elizabeth was 7 years old when her mother died. She said that her mother died as a result of the cabin roof leaking on her mother's head. According to Mary Elizabeth, relatives or friends took them in after her mother died, and the baby died shortly after. That August, James took the 5 children by train to his mother's home in Brown County, IN. They remained with their grandmother until they were old enough to be of service to other people. For example, Mary Elizabeth was about 9 when the Civil War broke out. She stayed with women who had small children, helping them with the children while their husbands were away. James remarried (Margaret Ann Ellis), remained in Brown Co., IN where his parents resided and had 5 more children with Margaret.
