Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was a civil engineer when he enlisted as a Private in the Monroe Light Infantry. Elected Captain of a company in the 15th North Carolina, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in April, 1862. He led the 15th North Carolina in the battles of the Seven Days, Fredericksburg, Second Manassas and Sharpsburg. In 1864, he distinguished himself during the Overland Campaign and was promoted a Brigadier General in the Army of Northern Virginia. He served with the Army of Northern Virginia for the rest of the war, being paroled at Appomattox. After the war, he became superintendent of a number of Southern railroads.
