Folk Figure. She was switched at birth with Kimberly Michelle Mays. Arlena (actually Kimberly) was born with a heart defect and not expected to live. She was switched with a healthy baby, which some believe was quite possibly intentional. The switch was discovered when she was 9 years old, shortly before she was to undergo open heart surgery. Although the surgery was a success, she died later that night, surrounded by her parents, Ernest and Regina Twigg, and sister Irisa. The "real" Arlena, who was raised as Kimberly Mays didn't live with her biological parents until she was in her teens. Arlena and Kimberly's story has been the subject of a made-for-television movie "Switched At Birth," and a book "The Baby Swap Conspiracy."
