Leading British actor of both stage and screen. Famed for his roles in Shakespeares plays, during the 1960's, he was widely regarded as the heir to the throne of the great Laurence Olivier. Amongst his many film and T.V. roles were appearances in "Cleopatra"(1963), "Henry V" (1989), "The Pope Must Die" (1991) and "Chaplin" (1992). After his departure from the National Theatre in 1970 and the breakup of his marriage to Maggie Smith three years later, he suffered a slump worsened by heavy drinking. In the 1990's the Royal Shakespeare Company invited him to play Falstaff in "Henry IV" and then Lear in "King Lear", thus re-establishing his acting career. In the New Year honours of 1995 he was Knighted. His funeral was held at Golders Green Crematorium on the 20th Novemeber, 1995. His ashes were removed on the 15th December, 1995 for dispersal elsewhere.
