Anna Dorathea Ritz was the daughter of Johannes & Christine Elisabeth (Deichmoller) Ritz. She was born 11 Jun 1821, in Vacha, Germany.

On 19 July 1846, in Vacha, she wed Carsten Heinrich Friedrich Meyer, son of Heinrich Dietrich & Margarette (Clausen) Meyer.

On 06 Oct 1857, Heinrich & Dorathea along with their four children (John Henry, Conrad, Dorothea and Anna) arrived in the Port of New York aboard the Bremen bark "Union" and began a new life in America.

The family first settled in Cook, Illinois. According to Dorathea's death certificate, they were probably in Illinois for about 12 years.

In Cook County, three more children were born to Heinrich and Dorathea: Eleonora Christina Dorathea in 1861; Carl in 1864, and Catherine in 1869. Catherine must have died very young, as she only appears in one census record, and that is the 1870 census in Benton County, Iowa. It must have been right after Catherine's birth that they moved to Iowa, since she is shown as being born in Illinois in 1869, and appears in the 1870 Iowa Census.

Dorathea died on 12 Feb 1890, and, according to her death certificate, and was buried in the Luthren Burying Grounds on 15 Feb 1890.
