Histor of Shelby county

Alexander H. McTaggart was born January 15, 1842 in Washington county, Ohio and was the son of Neil and Catherine Lonichan McTaggart. Alexander was Postmaster in Pana since 1905. He was educated in the log school houses of his day which were fitted with slab benches.
He enlisted for three years in the Company K, Thirty ninth Regiment, Ohio Volunteers beginning as a private and finishing with the rank of lieutenant, although during the war he served as commander of his company. He was wounded in the war around Atlanta, a spent ball struck his left shoulder causing a wound that confined him to the hospital for two months and from the effects he never entirely recovered.
In the fall of 1865 Mr. Mctaggart married Margaret Brown, whose relatives lived in Shelby county, Ill. To them were born three children, Edwin H. of Meridan, Tex, William F. Pana, and Arthur C. in Pana.
Mr. McTaggart and his wife settled in Selby county and had a farm near Pana. They lived on this property for thirty four years.
When he was appointed Postmaster there were six rural free delivery routes starting from his office and it grew to 33 1/3 percent in four years. There were 14 employees with an assistant and three clerks.
Mr. McTaggart was a charter member of Oconee Post Grand Army Republic of which he was Post Commander and was also at one time District Inspector of Posts.
