SOUTH BEND - John Vincent "Jack" Rockne died at The Sanctuary at Holy Cross, South Bend, on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 10th, at the age of 82 from complications with cancer. Jack was born in South Bend on April 14, 1926, the youngest son of Knute and Bonnie Rockne. He is survived by his four children, Knute, Salt Lake City, Utah, Jeanne Anne, Columbus, Ohio, Nils, Dallas, Texas, and Erik of South Bend, survive him. 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive Jack.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie (Skiles) and Knute; brothers, Knute Lars and William Dorias; a sister, MaryJeane; wife, Joann (Hays); and four sons, John O., Paul Michael, William and Timothy.
Jack attended St. Joseph grade school in South Bend. He graduated from Campion High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. After serving with the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946, Jack continued his education by attending Notre Dame from 1947-1949, transferred to Utah State University and graduated in 1951.
A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, August 15, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the University of Notre Dame campus. There will be no visitation. The Hickey Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made in Jack's name to the Marine Corps League, 539 Parry St., South Bend, IN 46617; to The Rockne Heritage Fund, University of Notre Dame; or to the charity of your choice.
