Mrs. Susan Phelps died this morning at the residence of her son Wm. Phelps, in this city, aged 87 years. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the Congregational church in Fredonia.

I have recently learned that Susan's grandfather John Hogeland was not the son of William b. 1720, but of Williams brother Hendrick. Williams will probated Nov. 25, 1799 records:
"1799, Nov. 25. Hoogland, William, Sr., of Kingwood Twsp., Hunterdon Co.; will of. Real and personal to be sold. William, 20. Grandson, William Hoagland (son of son, Isaac, dec'd),; 30. also 1 windmill and harrow in his possession. Daughter, Mary (wife of William Allen), 50. Daughter, Sarah (wife of William Taylor), 50. Daughter, Rachel (wife of Thomas West), 50. Granddaughter, Rebekkah Hogland (daughter of son, Edmund, dec'd) 5 when of age. Grandsons, Samuel and John ( sons of son Edmund, dec'd) each 5, when 21. Residue to be divided between my 3 sons, Derick, John and Joseph Hogland. Executor--friend, Richard Opdycke. Witnesses--Doughty Stockton, John Bray and William West. Proved Feb. 5, 1800. Lib. 38, pg. 424
Clearly Williams son John was still alive when his will was proved in 1799, thus Williams son John could not have been the John Hogeland who died in 1784 and who was married to Francis Opdyck. Francis was married a second time in 1786 to Ambrose Barcroft and it is noted in the Barcroft genealogy that she was the widow of John Hogeland. Therefore her husband,John must have been the son of Hendrik. His grave notes he died at the age of 29.
In the book History and Genealogy of the Hoagland Family in America From their first Settlement at New Amsterdam, 1638 to 1891 by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter Hendrick, Williams brother is shown as having a son John born October 9, 1754 (pg. 188-189 in book/ book found on line at ancestry.com pg. 192-193). This is the John who died in 1784 and was married to Francina Opdyck.

John Hogeland who was married to Frances Opdyke was not the son of William who was born 1720 as the family history I first noted and that is posted on this memorial stated, but the son of Williams brother Hendrick and his wife Leah.
The family record I quoted has it wrong as does the book History and Genealogy of the Hoagland family in America 1638-1891 by Cornelius N. Hoagland.
I found this mistake when reading William's will on line. His will records his son John as living when he died in 1799 years after the the John Hogeland/Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke had died. Therefore the John Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke could not have been his Williams son. The book by Conelius Hoagland noted that Hendrick b. 1725-1726, brother of William, had a son John born October 1754. This is the John Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke. His grave notes he died when he was 29 which matches with him being born 1754 and facts about Frances and when she married her second husband. Frances second husband, Ambraose Barcroft's, genealogy notes they were married about 1786 which would have been just about two years after her husband John died. The facts noted show that the John Hoagland married to Francis Updyke was the son of Hendrick not William. You can find the correct information on the John who married Frances Updyke and his line by clicking on memorial # 188298366 which now shows the correct information.
I am sorry for the mistake, but the information I had at the time I sent you the first information has since be found to be incorrect according to the facts recorded in Williams will and the Barcroft genealogy, as well as other information I have found.

Clearly Williams son John was still alive when his will was proved in 1799, thus Williams son John could not have been the John Hogeland who died in 1784 and who was married to Francis Opdyck. Francis was married a second time in 1786 to Ambrose Barcroft and it is noted in the Barcroft genealogy that she was the widow of John Hogeland. Therefore her husband,John must have been the son of Hendrik. His grave notes he died at the age of 29.
In the book History and Genealogy of the Hoagland Family in America From their first Settlement at New Amsterdam, 1638 to 1891 by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter Hendrick, Williams brother is shown as having a son John born October 9, 1754 (pg. 188-189 in book/ book found on line at ancestry.com pg. 192-193). This is the John who died in 1784 and was married to Francina Opdyck.

John Hogeland who was married to Frances Opdyke was not the son of William who was born 1720 as the family history I first noted and that is posted on this memorial stated, but the son of Williams brother Hendrick and his wife Leah.
The family record I quoted has it wrong as does the book History and Genealogy of the Hoagland family in America 1638-1891 by Cornelius N. Hoagland.
I found this mistake when reading William's will on line. His will records his son John as living when he died in 1799 years after the the John Hogeland/Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke had died. Therefore the John Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke could not have been his Williams son. The book by Conelius Hoagland noted that Hendrick b. 1725-1726, brother of William, had a son John born October 1754. This is the John Hoagland who was married to Francis Updyke. His grave notes he died when he was 29 which matches with him being born 1754 and facts about Frances and when she married her second husband. Frances second husband, Ambraose Barcroft's, genealogy notes they were married about 1786 which would have been just about two years after her husband John died. The facts noted show that the John Hoagland married to Francis Updyke was the son of Hendrick not William. You can find the correct information on the John who married Frances Updyke and his line by clicking on memorial # 188298366 which now shows the correct information.
I am sorry for the mistake, but the information I had at the time I sent you the first information has since be found to be incorrect according to the facts recorded in Williams will and the Barcroft genealogy, as well as other information I have found.
