Michael MAIER born in October 1866 in Beresina, Akkerman, Bessarabia, South Russia was the son of Christian MAIER and Karolina RATTEY.

In search of suitable farm land that was virtually free and a better way of life Michael MAIER immigrated to America in 1886. He found that homestead about 16 miles south of Kulm, LaMoure County, North Dakota on Section 13, Township 130N, Range 67W, W5 in McIntosh County.

Approximately 2 miles north of this location he also found the love of his life, Elisabetha Margaretha WELLER. They were married on 6 Oct 1889 in Kulm, LaMoure County, North Dakota.

The family farmed there until the spring of 1910, when Michael and his son John went to the Hilda, Alberta district and took on a new homestead. Michael then returned to North Dakota and apparently sold his 320 acre patented homestead while John remained in Canada. In addition to tending to the new homestead John also worked in Medicine Hat and Redcliff.

During the spring of 1911 the entire Michael MAIER family left North Dakota and traveled to Irvine, Alberta by train bringing with them horses, cattle, and machinery and household goods. From Irvine they journeyed by wagon over country roads to Hilda, Alberta. They farmed there until 1929, at which time the couple retired to Medicine Hat, Alberta.
