Born Ronald Allan Kelley Poe in San Carlos City, Philippines, he began his film career in the 1950s and eventually starred in more than 200 films where he was popular among impoverished Filipinos for his roles as a fast-punching, underdog champion of the poor. He was a five-time winner of the nation's top film prize. He also produced, directed and wrote many of his films. Narrowly lost the 2004 race for president of the Philippines when he came within three per cent of ousting the incumbent president in the May election. Cause of death: apparent stroke, in Manila, Philippines.
