Was Former Mayor, Lumberman,
Physician and Democratic
Leader.

NORTH TONAWANDA-Dr. Henry
Smoyer, 72, died last evening at
his home, 1150 Oliver street. Dr.
Smoyer, a native of the town of
Pendleton, had been a resident of
this city since 1895 with the excep- |
tIon of a few years spent in Sala-
manca. N. Y.
He was a former mayor and city
treasurer of this city and served as
.school physician for many years.
He graduated from the University of
Buffalo in 1895 and took up the
practice of medicine here the same
year. He became a Democratic leader
and In 1903 was elected mayor
and served a term of two years.
He then removed to Salamanca,
where he purchased a saw mill. He
was engaged In the lumber business
there and also practiced medicine
until September, 1907, when he lost
his left arm in an accident in the
lumber mill.
Upon his recovery, he returned
to this city and in 1908 was elected
city treasurer. He was re-elected
for three terms. In 1926 he was
appointed school physician and held
that office until he resigned last
June because of falling health.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Teresa Mary Smoyer, at home, and
a son, Henry L. Smoyer, of the town
of Pendleton.
Funeral services will be held Sunday
at 2:30 p.m. at the home. The
Rev. William H. Saye will officiate.
Interment will be In Acacia Park
cemetery.
