OAK RIDGE - Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, June 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Methodist Church for Mildred Eliza Nixon Nolan, 98, of Oak Ridge, Crowley native, who died Saturday, May 31, 2003 in Shreveport.
Officiating will be Rev. William Peoples, District Superintendent Shreveport District, assisted by Rev. Marie Williams, District Superintendent Monroe District.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge Baptist Cemetery in Oak Ridge.
Visitation is Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mulhearn Funeral Home of Rayville.
She is survived by a son, Rev. William Earl Nolan and his wife Janet of Shreveport, and grandchildren, William Walter Nolan, John Charles Nolan, Julie Nolan Loker and Joseph Lowell Nolan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Nolan; two sons, John Travis Nolan and Charles Henry Nolan; a sister, Dorothy Younce, and a brother, Larry Nixon.
Mrs. Nolan was a retired school teacher with the Morehouse Parish School System. She was the first woman member on the Council of Ministries Louisiana Methodist Conference where she served as chairperson for Archives and History. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She wrote 17 feature articles for the Bastrop Enterprise on Methodism in Northeast Louisiana and edited several books on history. Her father, John T. Nixon was editor for the Crowley Daily Signal and started the Monroe Evening News with partner Julius Cheney in 1893.
Her mother, Leola White Nixon was an educator in mathematics and at one time was a principal of Oak Ridge School. Mrs. Nolan followed that legacy left by her parents.
Memorials may be made to the Oak Ridge Methodist Church or the Archives of Centenary Colloge.
