Obituary

CASCADE, VA — Anne Scales Hairston Sims, 95, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 12 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 600 Morgan Road in Eden, conducted by The Rev. Michael Zumpf. Inturnment will follow in the Christ Episcopal Church Columbarium, Martinsville, VA.

Mrs. Sims was born September 19, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, VA, daughter of the late Joseph Harry and Grace Fitts Scales. She was a teacher and librarian for the Henry County Schools many years and also for the Martinsville Public Library. She was a graduate of Axton High School, Longwood College, and obtained her Masters in Library Science from the University of NC, Greensboro. Mrs. Sims was a member of the Border Book Club, the Virginia Huguenot Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Cascade Homemakers Club.

She was an avid gardener, accomplished in needlework tapestry, a lover of animals and a horsewoman in her youth. She greatly enjoyed her travels with her late husband, Wilbur Sims, throughout the US to Alaska and Europe. Her love of the extended family was important to keeping everyone close over the years. She was a gracious and generous hostess and a dedicated teacher of Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, both at Cascade Presbyterian Church and St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Surviving is daughter, Mary Anne Hairston Davis of New Haven, Connecticut; sons, George Hairston, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Spartanburg, SC and Peter Perkins Hairston and wife, Melissa, two grandchildren, Robert George Hairston and Virginia Eleanor Hairston of North Oaks, MN; sister, Grace Scales Evans of West Friendship, Maryland; step-sons, Edward Sims and wife, Carol of Orlando, FL, and Wilbur M. Sims, Jr. and wife, Charlotte of Richmond, VA; numerous nieces, nephews, and her loving and dedicated caregiver, Mollie Wooding.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, George Hairston and Wilbur Montgomery Sims; brothers, Edgar Forrest Scales and Joseph Harry Scales; and sister, Elizabeth Scales DeShazo.

The family will receive friends Friday evening February 11 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the home.
