He was the second of five children.

Veryl, Verdie, Edith and Richard.

He grew up in Washougal, Wa.

Enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was a cook on the USS U.S. Grant during World War 11.

He met and married Joanna Bryden in Greenwich, Conn. in 1952 while working on a dairy farm. After their first daughter was born they moved to California where he continued work as a dairyman. In 1959 they moved back to Washington state and bought a seven acre farm in Orchards.
By 1961 they had 4 children by then and he went to work in the Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill in Camas, Wa.

In his later years he enjoyed working with his fellow veterans through the local VFW Post 4278. Although he was a quiet man , his strong work ethic and moral values were loud and noticeable to everyone around him. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.
