John, Almira and their daughters Almeda & Julia immigrated to the US about 1842, settling first in Quincy, IL., then moving to St. Louis, MO by 1850. John became a prominent businessman in St. Louis, served six years as a City Councilman and was appointed Director of Markets. He became a naturalized citizen of the US on April 3, 1854.
John Cairns died in Hannibal, MO on September 11, 1885 at the home of his daughter, Almeda E. Lines.
