Spencer John Bent
Birth: Mar. 16, 1891
Death: May 3, 1977

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Stuffolk, England, he served as a Drummer in the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, British Army. In actions at Le Gheer, Belgium, on the dates of November 1 and 2, 1914, when his Officer, Platoon Sergeant and Section Commander had been struck down, he took command. He succeeded in organizing the men and held their position from the attacking German infantry. On November 3, he brought into cover some wounded men who were lying exposed to enemy fire in the open. For conspicuous gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on January 13, 1915. He later achieved the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He died at age 86 in Hackney, East London. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
