British Prime Minister. Born the son of British Prime Minister George Grenville, he graduated from Christ Church College Oxford, in 1780. He entered parliament as an MP in 1782 and was Chief Secretary for Ireland, (1782-83). He was Speaker of the House of Commons, in 1789, served as Foreign Secretary, (1790-91) and was Foreign Minister, (1791-1801). With the death of Prime Minister William Pitt, Grenville as a Whig was appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, serving (1806-07). Despite the brevity of his time as Prime Minister, he extended the political highlights of the shifting patterns of British political alignments in the later Hanoverian period. He also was responsible for one of the most important legislative measures of the early nineteenth century, the abolition of the slave trade in 1807. After leaving politic he served as Chancellor of the University of Oxford, from 1810, until death from a stroke at age 74.
