He married Minda (Foster) Thomas and together they had ten children: Cordelia, Elizabeth, Rilda, Gletha, Charlie, Willie, Calvin, Sylvester, Issac, and James. Charlie and Willie died at young ages.
In 1917, Minda preceded him in death.
John Henry married Minnie LeVernie Smith on July 12, 1922. Together, they had four sons: Gabriel, Aaron, Cleophia, and Joseph. Joseph died as an infant.
John Henry died May 31, 1948 not 1945 as his tombstone reads.
John Henry has many grand and great grandchildren in Tennessee as well as several in Oregon, Washington, Ohio, Georgia, Texas, Maryland, Indiana, and Canada.

THOMAS, JOHN HENRY – aged 73, died at his home on Route 3, Oneida last Monday, May 31. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie Smith Thomas, and a number of children and other relatives. Funeral services at Smith cemetery Wednesday, June 2, with Rev. Leland Thomas and General Cal Phillips officiating. Interment in Smith cemetery with Hickman in charge.
