John TenBroeck
TENBROECK Trusting in God's grace, John TenBroeck, 67, passed on to a better life Friday, September 5, 2008. He is survived by his beloved wife, Angela; sons, John Scott TenBroeck (Julia) of Charlotte, NC and David Austin TenBroeck of Omaha, NE; daughter, Julie Anna Houston of Ashville, NC; two grandsons; half-brothers, Frank and Paul Biehl of Portland, OR and James Lyles of Ashville, NC. Born in St. Petersburg, FL, John was raised by his aunt Ruth TenBroeck and grandmother Lula TenBroeck and graduated from Jacksonville's Lee High School in 1958. After serving in the US Air Force, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida and graduate degrees from the University of North Florida and Florida State University. He retired in 1999 after more than 25 years with the Duval County's public schools. As an avid runner, John competed in high school, military, college, and open events and coached for the University of Florida, Raines H. S., Lake Shore M. S., STAY Academy, and the Galloway Marathon Training Program. A founder of the Jacksonville Track Club in 1975, he served six terms as its president and was one of the founders of the Jacksonville River Run. He was a past president of the Florida Striders, a vice president of USA Track & Field in Florida, and was the national secretary of the Road Runners Club of America from 1984 to 1986. In 1980, he founded Fitness First, a race management organization. In the community, John had been a volunteer in several capacities. He had been Young Life leader in Jacksonville and Gainesville and several as the Federation Chief of the Clay YMCA Indian Guide and Princess Program for three years. Recently, he was involved with the JCCI project, River Dance. John will be interred in the family plot at the Rhinebeck, NY cemetery. A memorial service will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Grace Episcopal Church. John was born to Alice Ursula Ten Broeck and Roland Martin Lyles (son of Jay Roland Lyles) but was raised by his Aunt Ruth Gregory Ten Broeck and his grandmother. He requested that he be buried in the family plot at Rhinebeck but appears to have been buried in Jacksonville National Cemetery. His father Roland Martin Lyles m. 01 Mar 1919 Opal Ruth Curtis through was born a half-brother James Curtis Lyles.

N. B. most records have TenBroeck for John instead of Ten Broeck as two words; burial has been found in Jacksonville although his obituary pointed to this Rhinebeck.
