American author. He earned numerous awards for his poetry, including the Bollingen Prize for "Braving the Elements," the Pulitzer Prize for "Divine Comedies" and a second National Book Award for "Mirabell." In 1956, he used portion of his inheritance to establish the 'Ingram Merrill Foundation' in New York City, which has awarded grants to hundreds of artists and writers. In 1983, "The Changing Light at Sandover" won the National Book Critics Circle Award. He also wrote "A Different Person" (1994), in which he wrote of his unhappiness as a child, and his transcendence of that unhappiness through his poetry. He died suddenly while on vacation in Arizona. A final collection of his poems, "A Scattering of Salts," was published posthumously.
