John Simpson Crocker (1825-1890) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During the 1850s, he served in the New York House of Representatives and was Colonel of the 30th New York State Militia regiment. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he volunteered and was appointed Colonel in command of the 93rd New York Volunteer Infantry. During the 1862, Yorktown Siege, Confederate forces captured and imprisoned him first in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia and then Salisbury Prison, North Carolina. After four months in captivity, he was exchanged in August 1862 and returned to command the 93rd New York. He served until mustered out in September 1864 on a surgeon's certificate of disability. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he settled in Washington, D.C. and was Warden of the District of Columbia Prison until his death.
