Thomas Edgar Brockhouse, Sr. was born on January 29, 1895 in Peculiar, Missouri to John H. Brockhouse (1853-1918) and Clara Evaline (Patterson) Brockhouse (1858-1929). He was the youngest of four boys and one girl born to John and Clara.

On March 3, 1918 Tom enlisted in the Army. For the duration of World War I, he was stationed stateside at the Jefferson Barracks in LeMay, Missouri (until April 3, 1918) and Hancock, Georgia (until July 3, 1918). He made ordnance (probably dynamite) at both locations.

After the war, Tom graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. On August 16, 1927, he married Ruth Cecilia La Gasse (1899-1987) in Los Angeles, California. Tom and Ruth had two children: Thomas Edgar Brockhouse, Jr. (1930 - ?) and Barbara Ruth "Sugar" (Brockhouse) Dorricott.

For most of his adult life he worked as a principle at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles, California until he was forced to retire due to medical reasons. According to family lore, several actors and actresses (and their children) were among his pupils, including Marilyn Monroe.

Tom died on March 8, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. He was laid to rest on March 11, 1983 at Calvary Cemetery, in Los Angeles, California.
