John David YORK III

Birth: 1751
Frederick County
Virginia, USA
Death: Mar., 1792
Randolph County
North Carolina, USA

John David YORK III is believed to have migrated into central colonial North Carolina in the summer of 1755 with his father John David York II, his grandfather John David York I, his great grandfather Jeremiah York I and the children, grand children and wives of the Jeremiah York family. The Jeremiah York family was escaping from the aftermath of the July 1755 French and Indiana War with many other families most likely in a large wagon train traveling down the Great Wagon Road through the Shannodoar Valley.

John David YORK III married to Catherine DUNN about 1771 Colonial Guilford (now Randolph) County, North Carolina. Some descendants of John David York, I and II settled in the Iredell, Stokes, Davidson and Rockingham Counties of northwestern North Carolina just below the Virginia stale line. while other descendants remained in Guilford and Randolph Counties in central North Carolina for a portion of their lives before migrating elsewhere.

According to an application No 548XX to the Sons of the American Revolutionary War, a John YORK served as a Private in Captain John Johnatene Company under Colonel John Sellars Regiment North Carolina Militia from 1776 until 1778. He gave aid to troops and furnished goods. Sadly this application is in error as it has incorrectly listed the wrong descendants stating in error that John YORK was the son of Semore YORK I. John David YORK III is the son of John David York II. The correct descendants of John David YORK III (1751 -1792) are the children named in his 1792 Will with Archibald York as the executor.

It is believed there was a fist born son Abner York born about 1771 in Colonial Orange (Now Randolph) County. He is listed in his father, the John David YORK III 1792 Will. Abner York migrated into Iredell County by 1814 where his family is listed in the 1820 US Census of Iredell County.

"... Actually, Abner was indeed mentioned in the will of his father, John York of Randolph County, North Carolina, which was dated 25 JAN 1792. The John David YORK III will indicates he was bequeathing to his son Abner "1 Bay Mair Colt & Saddle, 1 heifer - two year old, a Dun Collier, three head of sheep when he comes of nineteen years of age." This record is in the North Carolina, Wills and Probate Records, 1665-1998 database on Ancestry.com, here: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=9061&h=934281&ssrc=pt&tid=44477499&pid=24884010658&usePUB=true As you can see".

Note: I have previously left Abner YORK out as the first born son and incorrectly connected him to the wrong parents. ...Dennis York, July 2018

The nine children of John David YORK III and his wife Catherine Dunn are listed in his 1792 Randolph County, North Carolina will as:

1. Abner YORK, b. abt 1771 NC; d. 1736 NC
2. Margaret YORK, b. abt. 1772 NC; d. ?
3. Mary Ann YORK, b. abt 1774 NC; d. ?
4. Johnston "John" YORK, b. 1778; d. 1838 MO
5. Tamer YORK, b. 1780 NC; d. ?
6. John David York, IV, b. 1782 NC; d. aft 1820 NC.
7. William YORK, b. 1784; d. 1811
8. Sarah YORK, b. 1786 NC; d. ?
9. Charlotte, b. 1788 NC; d. ?

*Note: There is some documented evidence for the middle name DAVID for John David York II. Some York researchers believe David YORK and John YORK are two different people. It is suggested David or Davie York is the same person as John David "Davie" York II; therefore the name; John David "Davie" York II. This is based on a statement from the "Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys, Frederick County" by Joyner, page 171. Jeremiah registered a deed for 323 acres for the tip of Terrapin Neck on 25 October 1736. Two other individuals also later claimed this same property on beautiful Terrapin Neck overlooking the Potomac River. This deed was in legal courts for 15 years when it was settled in 1751 with the issue of a clear deed for 323 acres to Jeremiah York. It is believed that Jeremiah York's wife Sarah Ann Wilson died in 1752. In 1753 Jeremiah York then sold the 323 ares to William Chapline on 4 July 1753, deed book 3, page 90, Frederick County, Virginia...."The chain carriers on the survey for the 323 acres were Thomas and Davie York"...probably two sons of Jeremiah York I. This was extracted from page 41 of "Pioneers of Old Frederick County Virginia" by Cecil O'Dell, 1995.

NOTE: Please forgive me for previously posting misinformation regarding John York and Sarah Horner. There are two contemporary John York families that I have previously mixed in error by working too many long hours without proper sleep and research. The John York who married Sarah Horner on 16 Oct 1752 and died on 11 May 1758 in Baltimore County, Maryland is a descendant of the Baltimore York families of William York (born 1635 London, England - 23 Nov 1690 Baltimore County, Maryland).

Through extensive YDNA testing of over 220 York men over the last 18 years we know this Baltimore York family is not genetically connected to the Jeremiah York family of Terrapin Neck, Virginia and Randolph County, North Carolina. May I encourage anyone to correct and edit the errors you may have posted from my errors. Please forgive me for any inconvenience experienced that I have regretfully caused you and your research regarding John York and Sarah Horner. This FAG Memorial is NOT John York and Sarah Horner.
