Pilot of B-17G-20 Flying Fortress #42-31531.

On a mission out of Glatton (Station 130), Huntingdonshire, England to strike the Focke-Wulf aircraft factory at Waggum, Brunswick, Germany, his bomber fell behind the mission group but pressed on to the target. While alone over the target, after the other aircraft of his squadron had left the area, was attacked by upwards of ten Luftwaffe fighters. Two Me-109s fighters pressed their attack on the B-17 and shot up his airplane, killing Ball Turret Gunner SSGT Omer Fontaine at his station. 2nd Lt. Lennartson stayed at the controls while the remainder of his crew he ordered to bail out completed their jumps. Before he could make his escape, he was killed when the plane exploded and crashed at Ristedt, about 34 miles northeast of Brunswick. Missing Air Crew Report № 3487.

The eight crewmembers who escaped were captured and became POWs.
