He was the son of Carl Wissinger, born about 1882 in Denmark and Louise D. Pedersen, born about 1883 in Canada. In the US Army, Carl participated in the D-Day Landing at Normandy, France in June 1944 as a Company Commander. He was also in the French, Holland, Belgium and German campaigns and received the Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster, finishing as Lieutenant Colonel.

He later worked for Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co., in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was vice-president.
