MASHPEE — John S. Wyllie, 89, of Mashpee, passed away at home on December 20, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a long illness with cancer. He was the husband of Fleurette (Demers) Wyllie.

He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 16th, 1923, and relocated to the Philippines at the age of two. He grew up in Baguio, Philippines, as a young boy, and attended Bishop Brent School in Baguio until 1941.

After finishing high school in Needham, MA, he enlisted in the 15th U.S. Army Airforce's 451st Bomb Group and served as a radio operator on a B-24 Liberator. He flew 50 missions, among them Southern France, Air Offensive Europe and Italian Campaign and was awarded 3 Bronze Stars for bravery.

His parents were interned during the war with Japan. His mother was released in 1945 but his father died previously fighting with the Philippine army. On his return to the U.S. he enrolled in Northeastern University and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1948 while vacationing on Cape God he met his wonderful future bride, and in October of 1950 married Fleurette Demers of Southbridge, MA. After graduation from Northeastern he began his engineering career at Sperry Gyroscope at Lake Success in Long Island, NY, with attention to aircraft and submarine mechanics.

The family lived on Long Island for 15 years and relocated to Cape Cod in 1966, residing in New Seabury. There were many wonderful years enjoying his passion for golf and fishing the waters off Popponesset.

Mr. Wyllie was active in Mashpee Community Building Projects, including Police and Fire Station, DPW Building and Quashnet School. He was a member of the New Seabury Country Club and an avid golfer, capturing the winning trophy one summer in a local competition. He is fondly remembered by all the folks at the local Picnic Box at the Mashpee circle, as well as many New Seabury residents.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Jessica MacMillan of Fort Collins, CO, and Margaret Arpin of Newport, RI; and his granddaughters, Abigail Arpin and Meredith Arpin.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, January 5, 2012, from 2-4 p.m. in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave. at Route 151, Mashpee. A private burial will be held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
